The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS, ‘Jesuit Refugee Service’) is an international Catholic organization with a mission to promote the rights of refugees and others who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. JRS wants to be there for these people and guide and serve them.

The Society of Jesus founded the JRS in 1980 in response to the needs of boat people from Vietnam. The then Superior General, Father Pedro Arrupe, was deeply moved by their plight and felt called to assist them.

To this day, JRS supports people who have begun the dangerous journey to safety. She draws her inspiration and confirmation from the Gospel of Jesus and the core values of love, compassion and justice. The word “refugee” therefore includes all who were and are forced to leave and this in line with the social teaching of the church.
