The wise steward

25th Sunday through the year. A woodcut from the end of the fifteenth century illustrates the gospel of the 25th Sunday of the year, Luke 16:1-13, the parable of the unjust steward. The caption to the woodcut reads: Vanden bosen meyer oft baelyu oft steward. On the right we see the gentleman who wanted to fire his steward. Because he had heard that he was wasting his lord’s property. On the left we see the cornered steward. In order to save his ass he devised a trick: he gave the lord’s debtors a part of their debt so that he could find a place to stay with them. We read in the Gospel: And the Lord praised the dishonest steward for having acted cleverly.
