As soon as Jesus was baptized and came out of the water, heaven opened up to him and he saw the Spirit of God descend upon him like a dove. And there was a voice from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I find joy” (Matthew 3:16-17). The dove and the Son can easily be translated into images. God’s voice from heaven is also shown. Since antiquity, the spoken word has been indicated by the speech gesture: a outstretched hand with outstretched index and middle fingers. In our picture, a relief in rock crystal from c. 800, we see from top to bottom the hand, the dove and the baptized one. The hand sticks out of clouds, so that we can see that the voice came from heaven.
