This weekend’s gospel reading is the first part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which is about the Beatitudes. The word “blessed,” or “happy,” refers to the everlasting covenant God wants to make with us, a covenant that brings blessing. In our time, many people are not receptive to this. We hear that Jesus already foresaw this. With the last two Beatitudes, He points out the difficulties that can befall us in this life when we take God’s covenant to heart.
