In the gospel of this Sunday we meet two women, Mary and Martha. Jesus comes along and Martha has her hands full to take care of him. Her sister Mary, on the other hand, sits at the feet of Jesus and listens to him. After a while Martha gets a little angry and asks Jesus if he can ask her sister for help. But Jesus answered her surprisingly enough: Mary chose the better. Maybe many of us have a Mary-side and a Martha-side in us. But why should Mary’s side be the better side now? Don’t we need activity to deal with the many problems in our world? Perhaps it is not so much that the Marian side in general is better, but that both sides have to be in balance. Only then will it be possible to make a lasting commitment to what is beautiful, good and true in this world.
