This Sunday we are talking about Poverty. And the disciples to whom Jesus says these words in the gospel: are blessed because they are poor. But Jesus is not talking about misery, about the inhuman conditions in which people in the slums of our world cities have to try to survive. That is poverty that we must combat by all means.
The gospel is about poverty that liberates us. It frees us from the tyranny of wealth, which is constantly pushing us to have more, to be more. Jesus speaks of poverty that frees us from the fear of others who dispute our riches. Blessed are those poor who live in peace with enough. Who do not strive for power, but for humanity. Blessed are those who do not allow property to build a wall between them and their neighbors.
