23th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The words we hear in the Gospel this Sunday from Jesus’ mouth are shocking: “If anyone comes to Me who does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Does Jesus ask that we hate our parents, children, or husband? Surely this is not possible. Did Jesus hate his mother, Mary? Jesus asks us to love our neighbors as well as ourselves. How can you reconcile this with this call to hatred?
